With its one-piece core and jacket strengthened in critical areas, the SST delivers much more controlled expansion and superior weight retention than other tipped bullets. Featuring Hornady’s trade mark InterLock ring system, this bullet’s core and jacket remain locked solid during expansion, creating massive wound channels.

When gun maker Savage Arms introduced the 300 Savage ammo in 1921, they wanted to create a more powerful cartridge for their Savage Model 99 lever-action rifle. Before that, the unique hunting rifle was chambered for the less powerful .303 Savage. When compared, 300 Savage ammo uses the same size bullet, .308 inches, but a shorter case. Jump ahead three decades, Winchester used the 300’s design as the basis for one of the most popular rifle rounds in history, the .308 Winchester. Despite that, the 300 Savage is known today as one of the best deer-hunting cartridges that has ever existed.
The 300 Savage cartridge is often found factory loaded with bullets weighing between 150 and 180 grains. One of the more popular offerings, the Winchester .300 Savage ammo, is available with a 150-grain bullet. On paper, it’s listed as having a muzzle velocity of 2,630 feet-per-second with 2,303 foot-pounds of energy. Reaching out to 500 yards, velocity for the 300 Savage round only drops to 1,372 fps.
